Bangkok to Phuket

It has all the major comforts of a modern city -malls, multi-cuisine restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. Outside of Patong, visitors are spoilt for choice for beaches to relax at. Head south and you have the beaches of Karon, Kata and Rawai, all lead up to the beautiful sunset spot -Prothem Cape. North of Patong is Surin beach and Kamala beach, preferred for their quiet, laid-back atmosphere and coconut trees along the sand that provide sunbathers a natural shade.

The Best of Phuket

At nearly six kilometres long, Bangtao Beach is the longest in Phuket and despite the many villas and resorts that are located here, visitors can still manage to find an exclusive spot for themselves. Desire something even more exclusive? Book a tour to the Similan islands. The Similan islands are restricted by the Thai Navy from November to February as during this time, turtles lay their eggs here. Starting from Phuket and riding along the arch of Phang Nga bay, it is in these waters where tourists will find the iconic James Bond island, one of many karst stone islands in the Ko Yao archipelago.

The ride along Phang Nga eventually lands you at Krabi province on the other side. Think of Ao Nang as a much quieter and less sleazy version of Patong. Maya Bay in Phi Phi Leh is the most sought after beach here, and for good reason -it is beautiful! Expect hordes of tourists during the day, but exclusive tours are available whereby visitors can spend the night under the stars at Maya Bay.

Comparatively less popular is Ko Lanta, located around 70 km from Krabi town. Popular among older tourists, the beaches of Ko Lanta are spared from loud parties and offer clear blue water right from the beach. The rest of the south west is dominated by the Trang and Satun province islands in the Andaman Sea. Ko Lipe in Satun comes highly recommended for its beautiful, shallow waters and sunset beaches. The remaining sparsely inhabited islands extend all the way to Malaysia -Ko Tarutao being the very last Thai island before you enter foreign territory.

But if you want to avoid it, instead make your way to nearby Ko Tao Turtle Island , which is an extremely popular scuba-diving destination and replete with adventure activities such a trekking, rock climbing, kayaking and marine excursions. The easiest way to get to Ko Tao is from Ko Samui. If you ever need a break from the Gulf of Thailand, return to the mainland via Surat Thani, considered a gateway to the south of Thailand by road.

From Surat Thani, you may take the bus or flight back to Bangkok or head to exotic getaways like Khao Sok National Park, covered by what is considered to be the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world.

Phuket Attractions

Although there are no beaches per se, one can enjoy canoe rides and swim in the vast lakes inside the park. Ko Samui is the largest island in the Southern Gulf of Thailand, and the only island in the area to have an international airport. Ko Samui has plenty of everything -plenty of beaches, plenty of resorts, spas, and enough attractions for sightseeing during the day. When the sun sets, the nightlife comes alive, but Ko Samui pales in comparison to other party havens such as Phuket and the aforementioned Ko Pha Ngan.

There are several other beaches spread across Ko Samui, but the notable ones include Bophut Beach a starting point for many diving excursions , Big Buddha Beach and Mae Nam Beach, preferred by families due its shallow waters. The Eastern seaboard of Thailand is growing popular as more visitors discover Rayong and Trat, given the improving tourism infrastructure in these provinces.

Besides Rayong's coastline, the province is noted for its fruit orchards, Buddhists shrines and national parks. Rayong is also the entry point for most tourists seeking to visit the island of Ko Samet. With its white sandy beaches, exotic corals and crystal clear waters, the eastern islands of Ko Samet and Ko Chang are the best alternatives for tourists who can't visit such islands found aplenty in south Thailand. Ko Chang is Thailand's second largest island and close to Cambodia, and therefore many tourists also use it as a gateway to get to Sihanoukville by boat.

Pollution along the over-developed coast and lack of consideration for the environment is starting to take its toll on its islands. Nonetheless, some beaches of Thailand manage to sustain their appeal. Some beaches may even surprise you, like the Kok River 'beach' in Chiang Rai, which is a landlocked province in the north. Despite the rampant commercialization, Thailand remains a great destination to relax, have fun and get your feet wet. Most beach destinations in Thailand now offer an array of similar services.

Whether it is snorkelling, scuba certifications or just exploring the rich marine life, Thailand remains one of the best destinations for all of the above. On land you could spend all day sunbathing, get a massage on the beach, or enjoy a wide array of spa treatments. If reading all this has tempted you enough, then wait till you actually get to Thailand. Cycle around rice paddies, trek along the lush mountains as you encounter hill tribe villages and feel the thrill of ziplining over the forest canopy.

Explore the classic sights of Thailand on a budget. Visit Bangkok, wander the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, and take a trekking in Chiang Mai. Discover Bangkok's rich history as you dine in top-notch restaurants, and journey to the southern beaches of Phuket for an adventure filled with cooking classes, stunning performances and island hopping.

If you have already taken your PADI course, join this tour and enjoy four open water dives in the paradise waters of Koh Tao, Thailand's top diving site.
